Filling the trade gap - where should the EU turn after Russia?

26. april 2022 kl. 15.30 - 16.30

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a tragedy and has also led to severe disruptions in global value chains. What can the EU do to fill the gap?

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a tragedy and has also led to severe disruptions in global value chains. Russia and Ukraine are key suppliers of energy products, grain, and other raw materials to the EU. For instance, The EU gets 95 pct. of its nickel from Russia.

What can the EU do to fill the gap? Should the EU work to strengthen Transatlantic trade and investment ties even more? should the EU improve trade relations with China? Is the time now ripe for ratifying the EU-Mercosur trade deal that has been 20 years in the making?

These and more questions on what the EU can do to reduce the economic impact of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine on the EU economy will be discussed by the following panel:

  • Cecilia Malmström, former EU Commissioner for trade and currently nonresident senior fellow at Peterson Institute for International Economics
  • Luisa Santos, Deputy Director General at BusinessEurope
  • Niels Heltberg, Director of Trade and Analysis at the Danish Foreign Ministry Affairs

The webinar is organised in collaboration with DI, Confederation of Danish Industry.
